Private vs commercial use
When applying for vehicle insurance, one of the primary determinants of the cost of that insurance is the primary usage of the vehicle. For example:
- Are you using the vehicle to commute to work and, if so, for how many days a week and how far is the commute?
- Is the vehicle primarily used on evenings and weekends for personal and family errands?
- Are you using the vehicle to conduct business, such as sales? (Business use)
- Are you a contractor who uses the vehicle to visit job sites? (Commercial use)
What the vehicle is used for, and how much it is used, will be key factors in how much you pay for insuring that vehicle.
For commercial vehicles, the registered weight of the vehicle is an important factor in the cost of insurance. If a truck is over 4500 kg, for example, then you may need a Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR) with the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO).
The use is also an important factor. For example, is the vehicle used for both commercial business and personal?
